Hunter Training


HUNTS Course: Hunter Understanding National Training Scheme

Like many other NZDA branches around New Zealand, Hutt Valley Branch runs a hunter training course "The HUNTS Course" for people who are relatively new to hunting. The course is run along modular lines and is integrated with NZ Mountain Safety Council courses.

Cost

The course fees for 2008 are $195 but participants must be club members.

  • Survival
  • Navigation
  • Food Cooking
  • Route Selection
  • River Crossing
  • Gear Selection
  • Trip Planning
  • Hunting Technique
  • Shooting Skills
  • Firearms Safety and Care
  • Stalking Technique
  • Habitat of Game Animals
  • Game Sign Identification
  • Game Preparation

Duration of course

  • 8 x 3 hour evening sessions
  • 1 x half day navigation field course
  • 1 x overnight bush craft field trip
  • 1 x 3 day goat hunting field trip

NB: A firearms licence and ownership of a firearm is not essential.

Advanced HUNTS Course

HUNTS course graduates can complete an Advanced HUNTS Course which involves the graduates planning their own deer hunting trip under the guidance of an instructor.
